Chicago Housing 1993

Competition Entry

A Chicago high-rise housing project known as Cabrini-Green was scheduled for demolition.  The Chicago Tribune, who had sponsored the famous Tribune Tower competition, sponsored an ideas competition to replace it.  My entry was a proposal for an architecture that could be built by the occupants themselves, without extensive use of finance or industrial materials.

The layout of the neighborhood is based on accommodating the three personality types, the material, the honorable and the spiritual, to create a sense of community.  The material is expressed in the rectilinear living units and court yards.  The honorable are expressed in the linear boulevard.  The spiritual is expressed in the spiral movement path, leading to the spiritual center.

The individual houses are built of masonry, perhaps mud brick or rubble from the demolished prior buildings.  Each house is centered under a domed room with other spaces having vaulted roofs.
