Residence  Eastern, Massachusetts 1972

Shortly after graduation your present author and three of my classmates, Roger Ferri, Ford Johnson and Judy Berke, formed an architectural association and began searching for projects we could work on together.  And, Lo and Behold!, we found one.  A 600 sf weekend house on a dramatic site in a wooded rural area.  The site included a large peninsula projecting into a large pond.

We sited the house out on the peninsula with views north and south along the axis of the pond.  The design was done under the influence of Robert Venturi’s book ‘Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture’.  With Roger’s influence we added a group of strip moldings across the entry fence.

The interior also embodied such ‘complexities’ with the living room being a two story space with the ceiling partly covered and partly open, allowing us to both control the scale of the room and have both a high and lower ceiling.  The corner tangent of the window and the ceiling is a ‘contradiction’ as it is a-structural.
