Residence Vermont 2004
A 3,000 sf residence set on a quiet lakeside, designed in the manner of the Shingle Style. The client was a student of cooking, thus the kitchen is enlarged in each of the schemes. In each case the entrance is through a double or triple height space opening to each floor. The house is flanked on the site by a garage and a pergola to create a sense of arrival and enclosure.
Scheme A was a romantic plan with an irregular footprint and a stair in a tower. Scheme B was a ‘rationalized’ plan with a rectangular outline. All the principle spaces are regular rectangles. Scheme C utilizes the heptagon, or seven sided polygon to guide the plan. There are no regular spaces but certain ‘functional’ aspects are contained in a rectilinear block which forms the front elevation. The heptagonal plan was suggested by the dominant personality of the client.
Scheme A was selected to develop further but the project did not proceed.
