Residences for Winter Park, Florida  2002-5

The ICAA partnered at several times with the AIBD, the American Institute of Biulding Designers, a national group of house designers based in Florida  Part of our course involved the students producing sketch designs based on a program for an 1,800 to 2,400 sf  one family house on a site in Winter Park, Florida.

In preparation for the critique your present author tried several solutions, a ‘Williamsburg’ house using a 1:2 elevation, a Roman villa style house inspired by the villa at the Piazza Armerina, a formal courtyard scheme with a garage in the front – answering to the comment by Andres Duany that the classical system could not accommodate a garage door – and a Greek Revival style house.

The didactic goal was to indicate that any number of solutions are possible for a single program.  For myself a goal was to compare my own responses with that of the students;  not in a competitive way but in a conceptual way.
