Residential Proposal   Nassau County  late 1770’s

Competition Entry

The brief was for about 200 residential units and a community center.  The site is laid out in a continuous curve to limit the views and create a sense of enclosure.  The central area is treated as a park with an inner walkway and pond at the center.  The shape of the layout is taken from the centerpiece of the courtyard of the Garden Apartments at ancient Ostia.

The Community Center is referenced to Palladio’s Villa Emo.   This design was done at the time that your present author was early in the study of classical design.  It was surprising how easy it was to put the ‘functions’ within the ‘form’ of the classical villa

The apartments are grouped in units of 16, with 4 apartments per entry.  The units are planned for prefabrication.
