Town Hall, Glenwood, Illinois, 1994
Competition entry
This entry was for a suburban town hall about 20,000 sf, a village square about 50,000 sf, 50,000 sf of accessory commercial space and parking for about 300 cars. The site was where a commuter train stop crossed Main Street. The site is dominated vertically by a water tower and a communication antenna.
The elements of the program are arranged to attempt to create a series of enclosed or at least semi-enclosed regular spaces. The large scale site plan is for the option without an actual train station and the small site plan is for the option with a train station.
The town hall is designed in a kind of Jeffersonian-Palladian style. The village square is laid out in a parterre with a center flagpole. Rows of trees are used to enclose the square on two sides, making it an outdoor room focused on the town hall entry.
